Maybe you’ve been thinking about it for a while. Or maybe a friend showed you a photo inside a water-filled gorge and you thought: “I want to do that.” Either way, you’ve ended up here — looking for the best canyons in Catalonia — and we promise we won’t let you down.
Canyoning in Catalonia is, without exaggeration, some of the best in the world. The Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, high mountain ranges and hidden valleys: we have a variety of gorges, natural waterslides, rappels and crystal pools that many European destinations can only dream of. And the best part? There’s something for everyone. For those who have never tried it. For those who want more. And for those who simply need the good kind of adrenaline.
Here’s our selection of the 10 essential canyons in Catalonia, ordered from easiest to most challenging, with everything you need to know to find yours.
First, something important: understanding difficulty levels
Before we dive in, a quick guide to the levels:
- Beginner: first rappels, small jumps, no prior technique required. Suitable for families and first-timers.
- Beginner-Advanced: longer rappels, bigger jumps and a basic level of fitness is helpful.
- Advanced: technical, long canyons with significant obstacles. Prior experience strongly recommended.
And always, always with a certified guide and certified equipment.

Great for an autumn or spring outing when the water isn’t quite so cold.
Book your adventure!
2. Sant Pere Canyon — Pallars / Congost de Collegats
📍 Congost de Collegats, Pallars Sobirà / Pallars Jussà
🎚️ Difficulty: Beginner
⏱️ Duration: ~2.5 hours
🪢 Highest rappel: 8 m
👥 Best for: Anyone doing their first canyon and wanting to discover what canyoning is all about
Sant Pere has something special about it: it starts right below the ruins of a Romanesque monastery — Sant Pere de les Maleses — tucked into a rock shelter in the Congost de Collegats gorge. From the very beginning, you get the feeling you’re experiencing something out of the ordinary.
It combines a 6-metre waterslide, conglomerate rock walls and an 8-metre rappel dropping into a pool. If you’ve never done a canyon before and want controlled vertical excitement, this is your first step.
You need to be able to swim. And you need to want it.
ADN Pirineus runs the Sant Pere Canyon from Sort. Check availability.
3. Les Espones Canyon — Vall Fosca
📍 Mont-Ros, Vall Fosca, Pallars Jussà (Lleida)
🎚️ Difficulty: Beginner-Advanced
⏱️ Duration: ~2.5 hours descent (3 hours total activity)
🪢 Highest rappel: 15 m (one of them over a petrified tree trunk — unique in Catalonia)
👥 Best for: Anyone looking for a dynamic, water-filled canyon in the heart of the Pallars
The “king of the Vall Fosca”. That’s what those who know it well call it — and not without reason.
Les Espones is a Pallars Jussà classic with water year-round, surrounded by dense forest and a character all its own. It splits into two clearly distinct sections: the first is more technical, with short but intense rappels and jumps into crystal-clear pools of up to 8 metres; the second opens up into a series of waterslides and scrambles through the vegetation.
Just 20 minutes from La Pobla de Segur, it’s one of the best options in the Lleida Pyrenees for a dynamic, memorable canyon without stepping into full advanced territory.
4. Forat Negre — Berguedà
📍 Vallcebre, Berguedà (Barcelona)
🎚️ Difficulty: Beginner-Advanced
⏱️ Duration: ~3 hours
🪢 Highest rappel: 15 m
👥 Best for: Anyone wanting a varied, complete canyon close to Barcelona
At the foot of Pedraforca lies a gem little known outside the Berguedà region: the Forat Negre. Five back-to-back rappels of 10–15 metres, jumps, scrambles… and halfway through, a natural cave the group crosses with water rushing beneath their feet. No other canyon near Barcelona combines outdoor rappels with an underground section quite like this one.
If you’re based in Barcelona or nearby and want a one-day canyon, the Forat Negre is one of the best you’ll find.
5. Font Bordonera Canyon — Alt Urgell
📍 Organyà, Alt Urgell (Lleida)
🎚️ Difficulty: Beginner-Advanced
⏱️ Duration: ~3 hours
🪢 Highest rappel: 20 m
👥 Best for: Families, groups of friends, children from 12 years old
Porous tufa rock (which prevents slipping), crystal-clear water flowing straight from a natural spring, postcard-perfect pools… and four progressive rappels culminating in a spectacular 20-metre waterfall descent. Font Bordonera is one of the most beautiful beginner-advanced canyons in all of Catalonia.
Aquatic, sun-drenched and wonderfully varied: waterslides, optional jumps and well-equipped rappels in a relaxed setting in Alt Urgell. Perfect for a first experience or simply a great day out.
6. Viu de Llevata — Alta Ribagorça
📍 Viu de Llevata, Alta Ribagorça (Lleida)
🎚️ Difficulty: Beginner-Advanced
⏱️ Duration: 3–4 hours
🪢 Highest rappel: 12 m
👥 Best for: Anyone looking for a beautiful, sporty canyon with its own character
A canyon that rarely appears on the usual lists, but absolutely deserves to — thanks to its impressive number of jumps and waterslides. Turquoise water, beautiful geological formations and a rural, peaceful atmosphere that sets it apart from more tourist-heavy canyons. Best visited in spring or early summer when water levels are at their highest.
A canyon best enjoyed at your own pace.
7. Barranc de l’Infern (Hell’s Canyon) — Pallars
📍 Between La Pobla de Segur and Sort, Pallars (Lleida)
🎚️ Difficulty: Beginner-Advanced
⏱️ Duration: ~3 hours
🪢 Highest rappel: 20 m (inside a spectacular cave)
👥 Best for: Anyone who wants a real canyon. With a capital R.
And here comes the star of the Pallars.
The Barranc de l’Infern is a classic of Pyrenean canyoning. Walls rising up to 100 metres high, 5–6 rappels (the tallest at 22 metres, inside a spectacular cave), waterslides and an entrance crossing the Noguera Pallaresa river — swimming or zip-lining, depending on the water level.
Technically not the hardest on this list, but the scale changes everything. This is the canyon that everyone who does it remembers forever. The one you talk about with friends. The one that makes you come back to the Pallars year after year.
You need to be able to swim. Prior canyon experience is recommended, though brave first-timers do it and love every second.
ADN Pirineus guides the Barranc de l’Infern every season. Book your spot here.
8. Pas de l’Escalell — Berguedà
📍 Near Vilada, Berguedà (Barcelona)
🎚️ Difficulty: Advanced
⏱️ Duration: ~4–5 hours
🪢 Highest rappel: ~30 m
👥 Best for: Experienced canyoners looking for intensity
Around fifteen rappels that don’t give you much time to catch your breath. The Pas de l’Escalell is a demanding, sporty canyon designed for people who know what they’re doing and want real intensity. Obstacle after obstacle with barely a pause in between — in the best possible way.
Not the place for a first experience, but if you’ve already got some canyons under your belt, it’s deeply satisfying.
9. Estrets de Sant Aniol — Alta Garrotxa
📍 Sadernes, Alta Garrotxa (Girona)
🎚️ Difficulty: Advanced
⏱️ Duration: 5–6 hours
🪢 Highest rappel: 40 m
👥 Best for: Sporty, active people who want a full-day adventure
A breathtaking canyon set deep in the Alta Garrotxa. Turquoise water, limestone walls and a landscape that feels like it belongs to another era. The “downside” (in the best possible sense) is that you need to hike 2–3 hours to get there — and every step is worth it.
Technically varied and visually stunning. Without a doubt, one of the most photogenic canyons in Catalonia.
10. Núria Integral Canyon —
📍 Queralbs, Ripollès (Girona)
🎚️ Difficulty: Advanced (the most technical on the list)
⏱️ Duration: ~5 hours (+ 90-minute approach hike)
🪢 Highest rappel: 20 m | Longest waterslide: 15 m
👥 Best for: Experienced canyoners who want the best Catalonia has to offer
And to close the list, the canyon many consider the best in Catalonia: the Núria Integral.
Split into two sections, the first is a non-stop sequence of waterslides, jumps, chutes and obstacles perfectly carved into flawless granite. The second section leads to the famous “death slide” — a long, vertiginous descent that captures everything canyoning can offer at its absolute peak.
Jumps of up to 15 metres, 19-metre waterslides and a setting inside the Capçaleres del Ter i el Freser Natural Park that is, simply put, a 10 out of 10.
Suitable only for those with solid prior experience. But if you arrive prepared, you won’t forget it.
